Share your SNRS Experience

September 14th, 2010 in SNRS 642-504 Go to comments

As you know, the CCSP certification requires you to pass 3 exams: SNRS, SNAF, SNAF and one of three optional exams CANAC, MARS or SNAA but currently this site has only materials for CCNA Security 640-553. Many candidates have requested us to put up materials for other exams but it is a time-consuming work. In the mean time, we created the “Share your experience” for the SNRS exam. We really hope anyone who read securitytut, 9tut, digitaltut, certprepare, networktut and voicetut contribute to these sections as your experience is invaluable for CCSP learners to complete their goals.

Please share with us your experience after taking the SNRS exam, your materials, the way you learned, your recommendations…

WELL THANKS for this section which i believe it gonna be valuable for those who gonna take the CCSP Path.
i have i question before i begin my study to CCSP for sure after finishing CCNA Security which exam should i take first is it (SNRS , SNAF, IPS OR CANAC) I MEAN SINCE WE KNOW THE ONLY PREREQUISITE FOR CCSP IS TO TAKE CCNA SECURITY BUT I AM AFRAID THAT I MAY FACE QUESTION THAT MIGHT BE EXPLAINED IN OTHER COURSE SUCH AS TAKING SNAA BEFORE SNAF
    THANKS IN ADVANCED

why snrs first than snaf and snaa? thanks.

    October 10th, 2010

@ykzrenev. Here is my view of why usually people do SNRS SNAF SNAA and IPS towards qualifying for the CCSP.
    1. SNRS – Is the common denominator as it lays the foundation for security principles as such.
The focus here is Secuiry Theory (a lot of overlap with CCNA Security here) and then more advanced topics in IOS Firewall.
The Cisco Exam Guide for SNRS is out dated. It covers only 642-502.
However I would highly recommend the SNRS Student Guide and Learning Network SNRS PPT slides/pdf as it matches the 642-504.
CBT Nuggets for 502 + updates for 504 are useful too (almost covers about 85-90%)

    2. SNAF – ASA fundamentals. To understand this section understanding firewall, nat, vpn concepts is a must. SNRS prepares you for that.

    3. SNAA – ASA advanced topics. So a pre-requisite is SNAF

    4. IPS – Finally you do the IPS. Typically candidates choose IPS since its easier to handle compared to MARS and CANAC as availability of an IPS device is easier for lab practice.
Try renting a rack that contains a MARS / CANAC setup :-)

Could you please share the valid dumps for SNRS

  9. toy_man
    October 14th, 2010

Amend my previous posting .. IPS is a core exam and SNAA is the elective chosen. Reasons though remain the same that MARS/CANAC setup is not easily available to do labs

    October 14th, 2010

    Passed SNRS today.
Study Material – Student Guide for SNRS is really well written
For Labs – Worked using the INE CCIE Security Track Basic technologies + GNS
= IOS Firewalls (covers a lot of CBAC, ZBF, Basic firewall stuff)
= Basic VPN command line setup of labs.
= For IPS part did the basic IPS setup via SDM (as explained in the CCNA Sec Lab guide)

For a foundation understanding, if using GNS hook up wireshark to the connection where traffic is going and save PCAP files and view them in the Wireshark GUI. This helps you correlate much much better with the encapsulations, header fields and such and you can map it to the diagrams in the student guide.

A good thing to do is once you have done the CLI based lab. Then hook up to that Router via SDM and see how what you setup looks like in the SDM GUI. What this does is helps get you familiar with which Tab data for CBAC, ZPF, VPN, IPS … and what click throughs you need to do. Helps very much in the SDM based Testlets in the Exam.

  16. noname
    December 20th, 2010

Passed 642-504 with 9xx/1000. Exam time is 110 min + 30 Min for none native speakers. There where 63 questions + two simlets (ZBPF + IPS). The passing score was 804/1000.
    I use:
    - original Cisco docs
    - CBT videos
    - GNS3 and an 2811
    - P4S & Actualtest dumps.
A new version of AT can be found here http://www.examcollection.com/642-504.html in some days. The dumps are valid. All dumps have only 4 choices per question, in exam you have 5 – 7 choices in 50% of the questions. So if you learn the dumps, learn the text not the position.

I have just clear CCNA Security and want to go next. But I wonder what should I will focus on now? SNRS or SECURE V1? Can SNRS compose with other CCNP Security courses to archive CCNP Sec after 14, October 2011?

  31. Jacob
    March 23rd, 2011

Can anyone just answer me this about CCSP and CCNP Security.
If i take and pass SNRS (642-504) exam before April 8
    I have basically 3 years to take the new remaining;
642-627 (IPS), 642-617 (FIREWALL), 642-647 (VPN) exams and then I am CCNP Security???

So i would NEVER have to take the 642-637 (SECURE) exam at all until maybe like 2013 or 2014 when the 3 years is up because i passed the SNRS 642-504 exam???

    Thank You

    You are right jacob.

  33. JeJe
    March 24th, 2011

    Hi Jacob
If we look forward Cisco Codes change history, we can see that all the compative course will available for composing new version of certificate. BSCN and BCMSN instead of ROUTE, WITCH on CCNP last year are the good case.
So, I think, excluding non-compative code such as MARS, CANAC…, SNRS, SNAF or IPSv6 still available for composing CCNP Sec. The deadline 14th,October is for some one who want to get both CCSP and CCNPSec. After that, only CCNP Sec available
So come on, just like me, let ‘s race with Cisco changing plan
